Jack Milner: Anybody who has been following the fortunes of Justin Snaith-trained Peut Etre Moi would have been in the pound seats on Cape Town Met day when she won the opening event on the card.
The daughter of Master Of My Fate could not have been a more unlucky loser of her previous race and with S’manga Khumalo up in her next start, she looked an outstanding bet.
However, runner-up to her that day was Everglades, clearly finding 1400m that day too short. On Saturday, Andre Nel’s charge runs over 1800m and should get off the mark when she contests Race 3 at Kenilworth, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares.
She was motoring in the closing stages, producing the fastest 400m to finish, and from a good draw with Grant van Niekerk up, this Gimmethegreenlight filly looks a banker in all bets.
Leading apprentice Rachel Venniker is a noteworthy inclusion among the riders engaged for the eight-race card. She has five rides at the meeting for champion trainer Justin Snaith and she will be competitive, although she does face some strong opposition.
Well-bred Navy Strength is her first port of call in Race 4 and should get her off to a winning start. This Dynasty gelding, who is closely related to a number of multiple Grade 1 winners including Snowdance, a half-sister by Captain Al, has become costly to follow but should be rewarded for his consistency when stepping up to 1800m for the first time with Venniker also taking a useful 1.5kg off his back.
However, she could face a strong challenge from Thunder Master, trained by Candice Bass-Robinson.
Venniker rides Thefutureisbright in Race 5, a MR 72 Handicap over 1800m. He has made good improvement stepped up in distance beyond 1400m. He shed his maiden tag over 1800m before going on to finish second and third in two post-maiden outings, over 1800m and 2000m respectively.
Snaith’s progressive charge, who is a three-year-old son of Futura, has not been seen for 12 weeks (during which he was gelded) but is likely to return an improved sort.
He beat re-opposing Exceeder when winning his maiden and the latter has gone on to strengthen that form with two wins and two placed efforts from four subsequent starts.
Thefutureisbright also had the edge over Exceeder last time out by a short head in a similar contest and, taking into account Venniker’s 1.5kg claim, returns 2kg better off this time around.
With Richard Fourie up on Exceeder it could be a close call between the pair.
